The NPR, National Population Register is a program of “usual residents” of the country. A “usual resident” is set for NPR as a person who has resided in a local area for the past six months or more or a person who plans to live in that area for the next six months or more.
The data for the National Population Register was first settled in 2010 by the then UPA government, and it is to be done every 10 years.
The NPR will be made at the local (village/sub-Town), sub-district, district, state, and national level under terms of the Citizenship Act 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.
Every common resident of India must register in the NPR. According to the Indian government, you don’t have to give proof for NPR nor biometric particulars will be collected.
The purpose of the NPR is to create a complete identity database of every usual resident in the country.
NPR: The central government announced a clarification on the document list of the National Population Register (NPR) on January 15, 2020. The Home Ministry will quickly be issuing a form carrying questions for the NPR registry.
The government explained that no documents or biometric details would be required while conducting the NPR exercise. The exercise will be taken out in all states of India except Assam between April-September 2020 along with the house listing phase of the census exercise. Most of the states have already notified terms related to the NPR exercise.
Two states, Kerala and West Bengal, have chosen to put the exercise of updating the NPR on hold, amid uproar against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act.
As per the latest government explanation, no documentary proof or biometric details will be collected for NPR exercise.
The NPR exercise requires the demographic details of every usual resident including name, relationship to head of household, gender, date of birth, place of birth, nationality (as declared), father’s and mother’s name, marital status, spouse’s name (if married), occupation, educational qualification, present address of ordinary residence, duration of stay at current address and permanent address.
Every usual resident in the nation must register under the National Population Register.
